Humanity's Checklist

A checklist for the human superorganism

Six things to fix so we can fix everything else.

You can't solve every world problem one at a time. That's putting Band-Aids on an infection. The problems grow from a few sources inside humanity's collective superorganism. Fix a source and it stops spreading the disease. It starts healing everything downstream.

      Why the source

      Band-Aids don't scale

Most of the world's good work fights problems one at a time. Each of those problems is real, and most of them keep coming back. Solve the six sources on this list and every other problem becomes solvable.

      Symptoms

Climate change, war, poverty, loneliness. Each one gets its own charities, summits and budgets, and each is treated as if it stood alone.

      Sources

They grow from a few shared roots: the story we tell, how we coordinate, what we can picture, what our feeds reward, what we admire and who gets to build.

      The flip

Fix a source and it stops feeding the disease and starts feeding the cure. Each item speeds up the other five, and the pattern repeats at every scale, from one person to a city to a species. The dominoes are fractal.

      Beachheads

Every item comes with a beachhead: one focused project that wins a foothold on its source. Six footholds open the road to protopia, a world that gets a little better every year.

      The math

What if $5 million was all it took?

Hundreds of billions of dollars go to charity every year. What if $5 million, spent correctly, was all it actually took? The world doesn't have a charity problem. It has a coordination, vision and status problem. The resources exist, and no amount of funding for Band-Aids will ever heal the core.

The only effective altruism is systemic.

A year of designer-goods spending, one square per hour

The world spends more than $300 billion a year on designer goods, over $34 million every hour. At that pace, it spends enough to fund the entire checklist in the first nine minutes of January 1.

one hour of designer-goods spending the first hour: nine minutes of it funds all six 8,760 hours in a year

      Fund the checklist

$5 million goes after all six sources. Every dollar goes to a source.

      Build one

Engineers, designers, organizers and storytellers: choose the item you were made for and help ship it.

      Spread the story

Item one is the story we tell ourselves. Sharing this page is how it starts to change.
